I read an historical novel about the Roman empire around 0 AD. Palestine was unique in being an idol-free zone and not under the power of pagan supernatural forces. Perhaps God ‘s plan was for Israel to be an idol-free zone, and so a world pioneer in a new spiritual religion.
But did that mean the wholesale genocide of all the existing inhabitants? Could not the destruction of idols and their temples be enough? The Bible says it was necessary because otherwise the Israelites would be seduced into pagan worship. But they went that way anyway.
Their wish to do God’s will in their own lives is commendable. The act of genocide is not. So where does that leave us?
In January 2018 I intend to write an article about the Bible and Zionism. It is one of the most challenging projects I have come to, intellectually and spiritually. It will be published on this website and can be downloaded free – I hope in February 2018.
