Gideon was no hero! He made lots of excuses, kept asking God for a sign, but at the endof the day he stood up and did what needed to be done. But his other name, Jerub-baal, shows that there was a blurred line between worship of the mysterious God of Israel and Baal, somewhat like Zeus in Greece. See page 84-85 for a discovered hymn about Baal.

To have a king or not?

Plus – we will have someone to lead our armies, and to make difficult decisions. (Less plausibly, he won’t be corrupt like the sons of the prophet Samuel).

Minus – We’ll be subjects (but we don’t care).

I think Gideon shows us you can be the smallest / weakest but with God you can make a difference – with prayer & time with God we can find signs, word of God and right way to behave – we can find the right words to say & action to take. We gain courage even if daunting that it is right way forward. We find peace in our hearts & strength. [not sure but thinking of Tank Man who stopped tank in Tiananmen Square, Greta Thunberg.. ]
