God refers to himself first as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, i.e. he enters into a relationship with us. Then he calls himself I AM or I WAS or I WILL BE – it is all the same in Hebrew. In other words, Mind your own business! It is equivalent to prohibiting images of God, because it is impossible to pigeonhole him.

An interesting parallel comes in the Hindu book the Bhagavad Gita, chapter 4 (I think):
Krishna as God says, “Know that with one portion of my divine power I create and support the universe, and know that I am”.
