    Jesus sent them out into the world. Today the church usually says, Come to us.

    And he sent them out to bless people – Peace to this house.

    The strange thing about Jesus is that he rarely prayed for anyone.
    Jesus seems to have carried healing around with him like an infection.

    Jesus’ sufferings were threefold:

    Mental and emotional- accepting the insults and jeering of his enemies;

    Physical – the agony of crucifixion;

    Spiritual – the desolation of his being cut off from his Father.

    Note: the soldiers were not cohort (480 men) but simply a band or squad. The NRSV is wrong.

    Jesus was accused of being:
    A magician,
    A false prophet,
    A political Messiah.

    What were they frightened of?

    The priests were afraid of losing their authority.

    The Jerusalem crowd were afraid of those pesky northerners taking over their city.

    Pilate was afraid because he could not categorise him. Jesus was clearly not a rebel, but neither was he insane.

    A very moving passage. Jesus’ grief is tangible. Yet he ended with ‘not my will but yours be done.’ Actually it’s the only way to live. It’s the secret of Alcohics Anonymous.

    Jesus clearly indicated that he was about to die. Blood could only mean that his death would be a sacrifice, like in the Temple. But what sort of sacrifice? It was a covenant, a sacrifice to create a new people of God, like Moses in Exodus 24.

    Jesus never got caught up in the self-centred anxiety about money or theology. So he could respond directly, out of his inner certainty.

    When Jesus occupied the Temple – with the backing of a million pilgrims- it was an implicit claim to be the true leader of Israel. No wonder the temple authorities wanted to get rid of him.

    P.S. I only recently noticed that when Jesus threw out the traders he also threw out their customers!

    The last post was for the day before!

    Jesus did answer the lawyer’s first question but not the second, I.e. show mercy.

    Then Jesus calls us from being consumed with busyness to making space to be still with God.

    Jesus’ emissaries were told to heal and to preach. And not be picky about food!

    Jesus says he has the Father’s authority and that he is the son.

    Jesus sent his followers out to A proclaim the imminent activity oh God, and
    B. Heal the sick

    Jesus calls himself the Son, the one sent by God,
